“Battle of the Badges” Blood Drive in Norfolk

The Norfolk Fire and Norfolk Police Divisions will once again be hosting the annual “Battle of the Badges” blood drive to help save lives and the public is invited to respond to the call and donate blood.

Everyone who gives blood can designate whether the police or fire division will get credit for the donation. The only requirements are: good health, must be at least 17 years-old, weigh at least 110 pounds, and would like to help three people through a single pint of blood donated. All blood types are needed.

The American Red Cross Bus will be parked at 701 Koenigstein Avenue, Norfolk, NE 68701 from noon until 6 p.m. on Friday, June 22, 2018. Appointments can be made by calling either the Norfolk Fire Division at 402-844-2050, or the Norfolk Police Division 402-644-8700. Appointments can also be made online at redcrossblood.org. Walk-ins are also invited to participate.

Registration Deadline for Wayne State College Band Camp

Wayne State College will once again be hosting a summer music camp. The Wayne State College music camp tradition began in 1946 when the Department of Music hosted its first camp for high school musicians. The 2018 camp will begin on July 23 at 9:30 a.m. and conclude with a final concert on Thursday, July 26 at 5 p.m. The deadline to register for band camp is June 22.

The newly designed camp for 2018 is open to all music students who have completed grades 5 through 12. Curriculum includes daily band and choir rehearsals as well as innovative classes in ukulele, mariachi, music technology, world drumming, musical theater, all-state audition prep and private lessons. Campers will work with Wayne State College faculty as well as other professionals to broaden their knowledge and interest in music.

Cost for resident campers is $300, which includes meals and housing. Commuting campers’ cost is $250, which includes meals but no housing.

Fourth Annual Northeast Nebraska Ag Banquet 

The Norfolk Area Chamber of Commerce’s Agri-Business Council is already busy with preparations for the fourth Annual Northeast Nebraska Ag Banquet.
This year’s banquet will once again take place at the Madison County Fairgrounds in Madison on June 26 and will kick off at 5:30 p.m. The theme of the banquet is, “Uniting the agricultural and business communities.”

Co-hosts are the Norfolk and Madison Chambers of Commerce. The banquet is a fundraising event for academic scholarships available to high school seniors and college students in Northeast Nebraska, but is also a way to highlight the agriculture industry in Madison, Antelope, Wayne, Pierce, Stanton and Boone, as well as northern Platte counties.
The banquet will include a prime rib meal with a presentation given by Steve Wellman, Nebraska Department of Agriculture Director.

It will also include awarding of $750 scholarships to six deserving students as well as the award presentation to the 2017 Norfolk Beef Expo scholarship recipient.
The banquet is open to the public. Tickets can be purchased for $30 May 1 through June 8, and for $35 from June 9 until the banquet date of June 26. Tickets can be purchased at Norfolk Area Chamber of Commerce office.
A Farm Family of the Year and Ag-Business of the Year will also receive recognition at the event.

The committee is currently seeking nominations for a Farm Family of the Year and Ag-Business of the Year. Nomination forms can be found at the Norfolk Area Chamber of Commerce office or on the Chamber’s website and will be accepted until June 1.
Additionally, members of the Norfolk and Madison Chambers of Commerce Agri-Business council are currently soliciting businesses and individuals in the targeted seven-county area to be event and scholarship fund sponsors. There are three sponsorship levels: Prime ($500), Choice ($250) and Select ($100).

Dynamite Duo & The Sparklers Concerts in Norfolk

You’re invited to celebrate the Fourth with Dynamite Duo and The Sparklers! The free-admission concerts will take place Tuesday, July 3, at 7 p.m. and Wednesday, July 4, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 404 W. Benjamin Avenue in Norfolk. Concerts will feature patriotic, sacred, Broadway and golden oldies music performed to the glory of God by local musicians on organ, piano, band and stringed instrumentation. Other highlights include accordion and vocal numbers, costumed characters, dramatic readings, sing-along numbers, youth performers and a magnificently decorated church sanctuary.

Dynamite Duo and The Sparklers is a community-service group comprised of volunteer performers of all ages from Northeast Nebraska. This season marks their 23rd year of patriotic concerts. The concerts are free, and all are welcome. The church is air-conditioned and handicapped accessible; doors open one hour prior to performance times.

Flame Weeding Workshop at Haskell Ag Lab

Attend a full day Workshop, Tuesday, August 13, 2018, Haskell Ag Lab, University of Nebraska, Concord, NE.  We will teach you how to do proper flaming to control over 10 major Midwestern weeds in 7 agronomic crops (field corn, sweet corn, popcorn, soybean, sorghum, sunflower and wheat).

Climate & Crops Public Field Day @ Haskell Ag Lab

Mark your calendar and make plans to attend a Climate & Crops Public Field Day at the Haskell Agricultural Laboratory near Concord on August 14, 2018.  The event is free and open to the public.  There will be activities for the entire family including tours, educational booths, vendors, hands-on activities, speakers and a free steak sandwich lunch.  We also plan to have the mobile Beef Lab, a 4-H shooting sports trailer, and other activities for kids of all ages.  Al Dutcher, UNL Climatologist, will be a noon time speaker. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. and continue throughout the day.  The day will conclude around 3:30 p.m.  Plan to come and attend for the entire day or part of the day.
