#1 Johnson-Brock, #2 Meridian Untouched Early

DAYKIN – Last year’s D1 state championship contestants, Johnson-Brock and Meridian, are looking like contenders again this season.

The preseason #1 Eagles, according to the Omaha World-Herald, cruised through the Freeman Invitational over the weekend. They defeated Friend, Sterling, Diller-Odell, Deshler and Freeman in the tournament. Johnson-Brock has defeated all their opponents in straight sets, and are off to a 6-0 start.

Nebraska commit Fallon Stutheit has already made her mark during her junior season. She has 60 kills to go along with 11 ace serves. Brynn Westenburg is also having another big year as a setter. The senior has 137 assists in their six contests.

The Eagles will host Pawnee City on Tuesday in their next contest.

As far as the #2 ranked Meridian Mustangs, they have cruised through their first two contests for an undefeated start.

In their first match of the year, the Mustangs beat a now 4-2 Blue Hill squad. The 3-0 victory was powered by Rylee Pieper and Halle Pribyl, who combined for 25 kills. Senior Erin Johnson also finished with 28 assists and 28 digs.

The second matchup of the year came against Silver Lake. Meridian went on the road and gave up 11 total points in the three sets (25-7, 25-2, 25-2). Pribyl finished with 14 ace serves.

The 2-0 Mustangs will next host McCool Junction on Thursday.
