KEARNEY, Neb. – Runners across southeast Nebraska are bringing home medals from the 2017 Nebraska School Activities Association State Cross Country Championships in Kearney.
The meet was held at the Kearney Country Club under partly sunny skies with temperatures around 70 degrees. Wind gusts of 40 MPH were in the forecast for central Nebraska Friday.
Syracuse freshman Ellie Wilkinson finished nine seconds behind individual champion Taya Skelton (Fort Calhoun, Jr.). Wilkinson claimed a runner-up finish in a time of 19:42.
Auburn senior Allie Binder was seventh in a time of 20:37. The Bulldogs finished seventh as a team. Holdrege won the team title.
Two southeast Nebraska runners went seventh and eighth in the Class C boys race. Syracuse senior Lucas Wilkinson outpaced Falls City junior Braden Kobza by two seconds. Wilkinson ran the 5K course in 17:43, while Kobza finished in 17:45.
Johnson County Central placed two runners in the top ten during the Class D girls race. Senior Aleisha McDonald ran to a sixth place finish in 20:29. Her sister and freshman Ashlei McDonald was eighth in 20:37. The Thunderbirds finished 10th as a team. Ainsworth won the the team title.
