Bill Would Relieve Johnson County Of Prison Uprising Costs

LINCOLN – The state Legislature’s Appropriations Committee has prioritized a bill that would relieve Johnson County of “catastrophically high” prosecutions costs following events, such as the 2015 Mothers Day riot in Tecumseh.

LB 861 would require the state pay the prosecution costs arising from a single correctional institution incident that exceed 2.5 cents of the county’s levy.

State Sen. Dan Watermeier said he introduced the bill to offer assistance to Johnson County residents, who must foot the bill for the cost of prosecuting the crimes associated with several incidents at TSCI.

Watermeier said it is not fair for the county to pay the cost to defend inmates from across the state, just because the prison is located within the county.
