HASTINGS, Neb. – The Bishop Neumann softball team took the lead back late in the game and defeated Auburn, 13-7, Wednesday in the first round of the Class C State Tournament in Hastings.
Trailing 7-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Cavaliers scored 11 runs, including two home runs from Maggie Vasa and an error that scored three runs.
Auburn Head Coach Grant Cole says the bottom of the fifth was uncharacteristic of the Bulldogs.
“They (Bishop Neumann) hit the ball well. They put us in tough situations. We had a few plays that we could have made to help ourselves out that we didn’t and when you don’t do that against really good teams, they know how to capitalize on it.”
Vasa finished with five RBIs while going 3-4 at the plate. Megan Spicka added a home run in the third. The Cavaliers finished with 14 hits on the morning.
Katherine Lilly doubled on a 1-1 count, scoring one run, to get the scoring started for Bishop Neumann. They took a 2-0 lead into the third inning. The Bulldogs took their first lead scoring seven runs across the third and fourth innings.
Hadley Chvatal pitched a complete game in the win. She surrendered seven runs on nine hits and struck out eight.
Auburn launched two home runs on the day. Kylie Allen and Meg Rieschick both went deep in the fourth inning. Rieschick finished 4-4 and was a triple shy of the cycle.
#3 Bishop Neumann (23-8) will play #2 Fairbury (23-7) in the second round at 4:30 this afternoon.
