Dixon, Auburn host Fort Calhoun in home opener Friday

AUBURN – Drew Dixon has gone from making diving catches in the outfield that earned him the nickname “Superman” during his sophomore baseball season, to quarterbacking the Auburn football team during his junior year to their most successful season since the Bulldogs won the Class C1 state championship in 2006.

The 5’9″, 165-pound senior leads an Auburn team that returns five starters on both sides of the ball, including his senior running back Baily Darnell. Both players figure to be all-state candidates this fall.

Dixon rushed for 943 yards, threw for 365 and scored 15 times during the Bulldogs’ 8-2 campaign in 2017 that included a playoff birth for the first time since 2008.

Fourth-year head coach Tony Janssen says you don’t always see it on the stat sheet, but the whole offense runs through Dixon.

“He definitely keeps things going. He stays on guys when he needs to, picks them up when he needs to. His growth has been key, too. Where he started off with us as a sophomore to now has been a lot of fun to watch. It’s come through a lot of hard work and a lot of dedication. It’s fun to see him have that payoff so far this year.”

Dixon had six carries for 80 yards, threw for 88 yards on 7-15 throwing and scored once in Auburn’s 35-0 season opening win at Fairbury on Aug. 24.

Huskerland Prep Report publisher Bob Jensen says Dixon has the “‘it factor’ that makes him the type of player others want to follow.”
