NEBRASKA CITY – Lourdes Central Catholic setter Ivye Meyer will be supporting new gear on the court this fall.
The 5’7″ junior suffered a torn ACL at the beginning of February during a basketball game. On Tuesday, she was back on the floor, practicing with her volleyball team in a large, black brace on her right knee at the Fr. McCabe Athletic Center in Nebraska City.
Michelle Kreifels, who begins her 30th season as the Knights head coach, says having Meyer’s leadership, commitment, work ethic and athleticism back on the floor will be huge when they begin the season on Aug. 23 at home vs. Falls City Sacred Heart (6:30 p.m. on KNCY 1600 AM, 105.5 FM and NCN21.com).
“Completely cleared and ready to go. We’re looking at her as our secondary setter. She’s just a powerful hitter as well, so we’re really glad to have her back.”
Meyer posted photos on Instagram last week in her volleyball and basketball uniforms, along with pictures of her rehab this summer, with the caption “I’m back.”
She finished last year with 111 assists, 36 serving aces and 91 kills, helping Lourdes to a 15-19 record and an appearance in the Class D1-2 District Final.
Lourdes returns nearly their entire roster from a year go, including Jacey Kreifels, Elaina Madison, Gina McGowen and Libby Baumert. Experience that Kreifels says will be helpful when making the transition from Class D1 to Class C2.
“There’s not a huge difference between C2 and D1, especially since we were closer to the top of that D1 (in terms of enrollment) last year. Any experience that you can have going into the following year, especially after the summer that we had. We had some success at some camps and we worked really hard in the weight room. That’s just all going to make it something special.”
Being more diverse with the offense and being “court smart,” including winning the pass and serve, will be crucial for the Knights to have success this season, according to Kreifels.
