It’s hunting season – firearm deer opener is Saturday

The firearm deer hunting season in Nebraska starts Saturday morning.   Nebraska Game and Parks Commission spokesperson Greg Wagner says tens of thousands of hunters flock to Nebraska to hunt white tail and mule deer each year.

Wagner says, “In Nebraska, $848 million pours into the economy as the result of hunting and hunting related activities and a large part of that is Nebraska’s biggest hunting season – the firearm deer hunting season.”

Wagner says Saturday’s cold temperatures are good for hunting. It is when things are warm deer don’t move as much so success rates drop.  He says fawning success was good this year and deer numbers are steady and continue to climb.  White tail deer can be found in all 93 Nebraska counties and mule deer populate the western half of the state.

Hunters need to take precautions when out in the field. Wagner says first they need to wear a blaze orange hat and vest.  Next comes safety.  Wagner says, “Firearm deer hunters remember one thing about the season.  Safety is it.  Ask yourself in a moments notice is that a legitimate target and what am I going to hit if I miss my shot.”

The number one complaint is trespassing so Wagner reminds all hunters to ask the farmer or rancher first.
