Kimmel Orchard Unveils Pollinator Playground

NEBRASKA CITY – The sound of children playing highlighted the ribbon cutting at the new Pollinator Playground at Kimmel Orchard Saturday.

Huskers football legend Eric Crouch, whose company Crouch Recreation designed the playground, said its windmill-themed slide and an apple-shaped spinner accent the orchard’s characteristics.

Crouch said the playground design combines recreation and education.

Crouch:  “As you see just looking around, a lot of this has to do with the education at Kimmel Orchard and the natural landscape that surrounds the orchard, just, you know, the fruits and everything.”

Orchard visionary Ernie Weyeneth said pollinators are the perfect theme for the playground.

Vaughn Hammond of the orchard agrees.

Hammond: “One out of every three bites of food that we put into our bodies is a direct result of pollinators. ”

Nebraska City Tourism and Commerce hosted the ribbon cutting, which was attended by dozens of children and their families.
