Live results: Nate Kennedy hopes to power Glenwood to top of Class 3-A leaderboard at state track

Before a hamstring injury put him on the shelf for about three weeks, Glenwood senior Nate Kennedy had the western Iowa track and field community buzzing.

His school-record times of 10.86 in the 100 on April 2 and 48.96 in the 400 on April 17 were state bests at the time, and his 21.87 school-record clocking in the 200 on April 12 was near the top.

The Rams hope Kennedy has returned to top form. If he has, Glenwood will be near the top of the Class 3-A leaderboard. Coming off a team title at last week’s state-qualifying meet, the Rams take high hopes into this week’s state track meet at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.

Most of those hopes ride on the slender shoulders of Kennedy.

“I think he’s just as strong as he was before that,’’ Glenwood coach Mark Starner said. “He’s really confident in the two. He’s really confident in the four.’’

In the 100, Kennedy’s 6-foot-3, 145-pound frame makes it difficult to explode from the blocks.

“It’s going to be a challenge, just because of the nature of the event,’’ Starner said. “It’s all in the start. He’s going to have to run people down, there’s no question about that. It’s just, how far will he have to run people down?’’

In the sprint medley relay last year, Kennedy anchored the Rams to the state title. After a busy Thursday of trying to qualify in the 200 and 100, followed by the 400 final, Starner will determine if Kennedy can handle relay duty on Friday or Saturday.

Glenwood has another top 400 runner that would be the star on most teams. Senior Kohen Watson ran a 50.06 in the open 400 at the Hawkeye Ten Conference meet. He could be a point-scorer in that event at state, and he’ll be counted on heavily in the relays.

“Nate and Kohen are our horses, and they’ll make whatever we have go,’’ Starner said.

It appears four schools have the best chances to win the 3-A boys team title: Atlantic, Sergeant Bluff-Luton, Marion and Dubuque Wahlert.

Atlantic is led by junior 800-meter standout Chase Mullenix and senior hurdler/sprinter Gratt Reed.

Mullenix is the top qualifier in the 800 and should figure heavily in the Trojans’ 1,600, 3,200 and distance medley relays. Reed qualified first in the 110 high hurdles and owns 3-A’s top time in the 400 hurdles this season.

“In track, there’s only so much that you can do,’’ Atlantic coach Alan Jenkins said. “You can’t go out and scheme against somebody. You just have to keep doing what you’re doing. We know what we have to score in. I think our margin of error is a little bit slimmer.’’

Sergeant Bluff-Luton’s chances are cloudier with the unknown status of Ty Boekelman, who was third in the open 400 last year and anchored his team to the 1,600 relay crown. He has been battling an injury and ran one event at the state-qualifying meet. The Warriors are extremely deep, but might not be deep enough to win a team title without him.

Two western Iowa girls have season-bests in 3-A. Ellie Mendlik of Denison-Schleswig has run the fastest 400 at 57.42. She’s also entered in the 200 and is expected to anchor the Lady Monarchs 1,600 and sprint medley relays.

Madison Harms of Sergeant Bluff-Luton has the top high-jump mark at 5 feet, 7 inches.
