Mayor Recognizes Champions In Basketball, Academic Decathlon

NEBRASKA CITY – Mayor Bryan Bequette recognized Lourdes’ varsity basketball team for its third consecutive state championship and students’ continued mastery of the academic decathlon with proclamations at Monday’s city council meeting.

He introduced Lourdes students James Mason and Chloe DuBois and credited the team for decathlon championships in the small school division since 2010.

Bequette: “We talk about three-times repeat in basketball … this team on the Lourdes team, is not just a repeat, but they are a dynasty.”

He said Lourdes’ decathlon scores have been high enough to win a small-school championship and Lourdes has been close to being the top scoring team among all divisions.

Mason was the highest scoring student in two divisions this year.

DuBois said next year’s competition theme is “The 1960s.”

Lourdes became the first team in Nebraska history to win three consecutive state basketball titles in class D-1.

The mayor recognized coaches and read the names of each team member on both the basketball and academic decathlon in his proclamations.
