NEBRASKA CITY – The Nebraska City and Norfolk Legion Baseball teams were each looking for more games to play before their respective area tournaments next Friday.
With a little help from former Nebraska City assistant coach and current Northeast Community College Assistant Bladen Bales, Post 8 and Post 16 played a doubleheader on a hot Thursday afternoon in Nebraska City.
The two teams, playing in sunny conditions with a heat index at 107 degrees, split a doubleheader at Clemmy Holmes Field.
Austin Viergutz had three singles, Brandon Zwiener had an RBI double and scored twice, and Norfolk beat Nebraska City in game one, 8-3. Jace Becker hit a solid home run and Post 8 came back from a 3-0 deficit, but Post 16 would score five unanswered runs in the fifth and sixth innings to win their 10th game of the season.
Norfolk also grabbed a 2-0 lead early in the second game, but Nebraska City scored nine unanswered runs, including six alone in the third, and salvaged a split with a 9-4 win. Bryce Levy threw six innings and struck out three in the victory. He also had two RBI’s and a run scored.
Post 8 Head Coach James Widoe says he wanted the pair of games to be at district-level competition.
“It’s a really, really good team that’s well coach. I really wanted to play well. I really reiterated that in not so many words in between games. I’m not sure if it was that or what it was, but I thought the overall effort, especially on the mental-side of it, was much better for game two.”
Nebraska City moves their record to 14-11. They will host Falls City on Tuesday in their final home game of the summer.
Norfolk’s record goes to 10-16. They are scheduled to play Creighton Prep on Saturday.
Concordia 11, Waverly 8: Jack Torosian and Ryan Ehresman had three hits apiece, while Nate Schwanke won his sixth game of the legion season for Concordia.
Concordia 3, Waverly 2: Damon Kissell threw a two hitter, striking out nine. Ryan Ehresman doubled in the sixth inning, and Brady Olsen drove him in for the winning run for Concordia.
