NEBRASKA CITY – Nebraska City police have recovered two bronze plaques reported stolen from the whispering bench at Arbor Lodge.
Police Cpt. Lonnie Neeman said the plaques were sold to a salvage yard. A friend of the salvage yard owner saw publicity about the plaques and called the salvage yard to let them know.
Neeman said he picked up the plaques Friday morning and they are not in bad condition.
The plaques may have been missing since Monday, but were discovered missing on Thursday. Police posted about the theft on Facebook.
Neeman talked about possible motives for stealing the plaques.
Neeman: “My guess would be for the scrap metal out of them, which, obviously the historical value is a lot higher than whatever the scrap metal prices would have brought.”
Mark Kemper said the plaques portray an image of the 1857 Indian treaty monument. He said they are made of bronze, so they have no value with copper dealers.
