NEBRASKA CITY – The Falls City Sacred Heart boys basketball team, ranked #1 in the latest News Channel Nebraska Class D2 rankings, controlled the tempo and limited Lourdes Central Catholic’s possessions to win the 2018 Pioneer Conference Tournament Championship Saturday night at Nebraska City Lourdes.
Senior Theo Rhorer had a game-high 13 points and seven rebounds and the Irish topped the Knights, 41-33.
It’s the second time the Irish have beat the Knights this season. On Dec. 30, Sacred Heart defeated Lourdes in the Freeman Holiday Tournament, 46-36. The two teams meet again in two weeks in Nebraska City.
Senior Ben Miller led the Knights with seven points and three rebounds.
The Irish are now 19-1 and will host an unbeaten North Andrew, MO team (16-0) on Tuesday. Lourdes drops to 12-7 and will be at Omaha Brownell-Talbot on Tuesday.
Friend hands Sacred Heart first loss this season, second loss in two years
Senior Raeleigh Menke had a game-high 15 points and Friend beat Class D2 #1 Falls City Sacred Heart, 51-36, in the Pioneer Conference Tournament Championship game on Saturday night at Lourdes Central Catholic High School in Nebraska City.
The win erases the memory of a one-point loss to the Irish on Dec. 8, 47-46.
Friend, ranked #8 in the latest News Channel Nebraska Class D1 rankings, finished with three players in double figures in handing the Irish their first loss of the year. Senior Maggie Lawver and junior Bridgette Baugh both added 12 points. Lawver grabbed six rebounds, while Menke snagged five.
Sacred Heart senior Abby Fiegener led the Irish, who suffer only their second loss in two years. Fiegener finished with 10 points.
Friend is now 18-3 this season. They will travel to #3 Meridian on Thursday. Sacred Heart falls to 20-1 and will host North Andrew, MO on Tuesday.
