Sacred Heart sticks to their bread and butter to win second-straight title

LINCOLN — Senior Sara Wertenberger’s basket with 2:16 left put the #1 Falls City Sacred Heart girls basketball team ahead to stay as the Irish repeated as Class D2 girls basketball state champions with a 57-51 win over #2 Humphrey St. Francis Saturday night at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Sacred Heart stuck to the strength of their team, post players Wertenberger and fellow senior Lauren Parrish. Parrish had 19 points, six rebounds and five blocks for the 27-1 Irish. Wertenberger finished with a double-double – 10 points, 11 rebounds. She also finishes her career as a three-time state champion (2015, 2017, 2018).

The Irish survived 17 turnovers and the Flyers adding 14 points off those turnovers. They out rebounded St. Francis, 42-25, leading to 13 second chance points.

A night after scoring 21 points in the fourth quarter to force overtime vs. Hyannis, the Irish outscored the Flyers 20-10 in Saturday’s final period.

Senior Logan Wemhoff had 15 points and freshman point guard Allison Weidner totaled 10 points and 11 assists for the Flyers (26-3).

This is the sixth title in school history for Falls City Sacred Heart.
