Sacred Heart’s Class D2 title defense runs through BDS…again
World-Herald News Service

FALLS CITY, Neb. – This year’s Falls City Sacred Heart football season is taking an eerily similar path as their championship run in 2016.

Last season, the Irish lost to Bruning-Davenport-Shickley (BDS), 36-12, during the regular season on Oct. 7. They defeated Bloomfield, 46-12, in the Class D2 quarterfinals and got revenge on the Eagles in the semi-finals, 16-12. They would go onto secure their eighth state title in school history.

Flash forward to this season.

BDS topped Sacred Heart on Oct. 6, 23-14. The Irish beat #1 Bloomfield in thrilling fashion last week in the D2 quarterfinals, 15-14. This sets-up a re-match between the Eagles and Irish on Monday in Shickley.

Falls City Sacred Heart Head Coach Doug Goltz says BDS has a great, experienced football team with a tough offensive scheme to defend against.

“They can spread the field and beat you with their athletes, but they can also just stack it up and run power football at you. You’ve got to be physical enough to stop that, too. It’ll be a real difficult game, a real challenge, but I really like the moxie that our kids have shown.”

According to Goltz, the key to the game starts at the line of scrimmage where they can’t get dominated. He would also like to see his team possess the ball longer to keep it out of the hands of the Eagles’ high-powered offense.

Kickoff between #4 Sacred Heart (10-1) and #2 BDS (11-0) is scheduled for 6 p.m. The game will be carried live on B103 (103.1 FM, and the B103 app).
