Springfield Sends Auburn to an Elimination Game

NEBRASKA CITY, Neb. – Springfield scored three runs in the bottom fifth and 10-run ruled Auburn in the second round of the Class B Junior Legion State Baseball Tournament in Nebraska City on Sunday.

Auburn watched the game slip away early and couldn’t recover in a 13-3 loss. Springfield scored four runs on doubles by Caden Mathewson and Nick Adkins in the first inning. They added two more runs in the opening inning on an Auburn error and single by Gage Graham.

Springfield collected 15 total hits. Jordan Mathewson and Caden Mathewson, Hunter Babe, Nate Jeffries and Grant Thomas each collected multiple hits.

Springfield starting pitcher Caden Johnson earned the win. He threw three and a third innings, surrendering one run, three hits and striking out three.

Caden Chapin took the loss for Auburn. He lasted just one-third of an inning, allowing five runs on four hits.

Brandon Lavigne and Kyson Warner each collected two hits for Auburn.

Springfield advances to the quarterfinals and will play the Class B defending champions, Waverly, at 8 p.m. Monday.

Auburn (14-12) drops to an elimination game with Alliance (31-9) at 2 p.m. Monday. B103 will carry the game live on 103.1 FM, B103.fm and the B103 app.
