MURRAY, NE – The Syracuse girls 4×400 meter relay team of Sarah Moss, Jaysa Zoller, Reagan Petersen and Lauren Siefken may not be going to next week’s state track & field meet, but their gutsy effort secured the B-2 District Championship for the Rockets at Conestoga High School Thursday.
Leading Gretna by a slight margin and the Dragons being the favorite to win the 1600 meter relay, Syracuse knew they had to get fourth place or better to win the team title, according to Head Coach Rick Nordhues.
“That’s what makes that race really exciting. When the meet is on the line at the end and you know what you have to do to get the championship, that makes that race extremely exciting and I’m just really proud of our girls.”
Gretna won the final race of the day. The Rockets finished fourth and took a victory lap with their district championship trophy in hand, winning the meet, 102-101, over the runner-up Dragons.
Sophomore Meredith Clark and freshman Lauren Meyer finished with multiple gold medals.
Clark, the defending district champion in shot put and discus, swept the throws for the second-straight year. She threw 41-05.00 in shot put and 121-09 in discus. Clark finished fourth in discus at last year’s state meet.
Meyer was an individual district champion in the 200 meter dash (25.91), long jump (17-05) and triple jump (36-01.50). She also finished second in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.77.
