NEBRASKA CITY, Neb – The Lourdes Central Catholic boys basketball team held a 39-37 lead going into the final period Thursday night, but were outscored 12-9 in the fourth quarter and lost their season opener to Parkview Christian, 49-48.
The Knights had the final possession with four seconds remaining when senior forward Jack Funke put up a shot from the right short corner, only to have it bounce off the front of the rim and the Patriots grabbed the rebound to seal the win.
Parkview, ranked #7 in Class D2, finished with three scorers in double figures. They were led by the 12 points from senior Tucker Pinyan. He went 4-4 at the free throw line and added two three-point shots in the fourth quarter. Senior Elijah Page chipped in 11 points and junior Rashad Woods added 10.
Lourdes senior forward Quinten Vasa had a game-high 17 points on 6-9 shooting. He was 4-6 at the charity stripe.
The Patriots (1-0) advance to the Lourdes Central Catholic Basketball Tournament championship game on Saturday. They will play Elmwood-Murdock (1-0) at 4:30 p.m. at Lourdes Central Catholic High School. The Knights beat Yutan Thursday, 58-47.
Nebraska City Lourdes, ranked #1 in Class D1 and the two-time defending Class D1 champions, fall to the consolation game against Yutan at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
Defense Surprises Coach in Lourdes First Round Win
NEBRASKA CITY, Neb. – The Lourdes Central Catholic girls basketball team held Omaha Duchesne to just 5-21 from the floor and 6-18 from beyond the arc in their 43-35 win Thursday night at Lourdes Central Catholic High School.
The Knights gave up only three points in the third quarter after trailing 24-19 at halftime.
Head Coach Clay Carlton was proud of his team’s effort in the first round of their home tournament and said the defense surprised him the most.
“We got after it. We communicated well. We knew where shooters were in the second half and just did a really nice job there.”
Junior Jacey Kreifels led Lourdes with 13 points, tied for the game-high with Duchesne senior Kirsten Nelson. Kreifels was 7-8 at the free throw line.
Nebraska City Lourdes (1-0) plays Elmwood-Murdock for the tournament championship on Saturday. Elmwood-Murdock beat Yutan Thursday, 60-50. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Lourdes Central Catholic High School.
