Unadilla Celebrates Groundhog’s Day 2018

UNADILLA – The Village of Unadilla celebrated its 30th annual groundhog day Saturday with a parade, live music, jerky contest and photo opportunities with Unadilla Bill.

The cabbage-loving groundhog’s handler, Bob Brandt, said Unadilla Bill did not see his shadow for the fourth year in a row, once again predicting an early spring.

Brandt, who estimated Unadilla Bill’s accuracy above 75 percent, said the weather has already made a turn for the worse.

Brandt: “I think he may have missed on this year because it has snowed every day since the report.”

The 2018 Groundhog royalty were selected after the parade. Ron Fechner is king and Rachel Zahn is this year’s queen.

Soup winners were as follows:

  • Chili — Mary Gardner and Chuck Kreifels
  • Other – Lane Rohlfs, Kevin Rohlfs
  • Spam – Kathyrn Romine, Steve Cooper
  • Jerky – Helen McKenzie, Presley Wilhelm
