NEBRASKA CITY – Speech is always bolder than action and Nebraska City students showed Monday their affinity for both.
The 18 Pioneer speakers presented a community showcase entitled “Words Matter” on Monday.
Coach Susanne Williams described the value of speech team.
Williams: “It’s about helping students learn to use literature to explore the human condition.
It’s about learning how to find one’s voice and learning how powerful words are. “
The Pioneer’s words were powerful enough to earn a conference championship.
Williams: “It was such a surprise to the people in our conference that we were accused of rigging the tournament. It shouldn’t have been though. “
Out of the 11 regular season tournaments, The Pioneer speakers were able to make it to 107 final rounds of competition, with members regularly placing in the top five.
The showcase featured district qualifiers for the national tournament in Fort Lauderadale, Fla. Oliver Borchers-Williams and Chloe Higgins. Drawing an uproarious response was Ellie Higgins’ Humorous Interpretation “Come Rain or Come Shine.”
