Scouting Nebraska: The offense awoke in a big way against Cal Poly last weekend, including 35 total runs in a pair of doubleheader wins Saturday. NU’s national rank in scoring rose to 70th (6.5 runs per game) as a result. … Senior Zac Repinski has solidified his hold on second base after entering the season as no sure thing to play regularly. The former juco transfer is 15 for 29 (.517) with 13 runs and five RBIs in the past seven games since being reinserted into the lineup. His overall batting average is .405, and Jesse Wilkening (.370) joins him as the only other Husker hitting over .300. … Other batters broke out of early slumps against Cal Poly, most notably Angelo Altavilla. The infielder went 7 for 13 after starting the season 7 for 41. … Matt Waldron is starting his 19th career game and second this season. Brother Mike, also a junior, will start for the first time in college in his ninth career pitching appearance. Nebraska (9-6) is 0-2 on “bullpen” days this season, losing to No. 2 Oregon State 9-1 and 14-8 to Cal Poly, so a quality start from either Waldron would be most welcome.

Scouting Northern Colorado: The Bears (10-5) haven’t exactly played a world-beating schedule in San Jose State, Montana State -Billings, North Dakota State and South Dakota State. But they’ve pounded their competition, averaging 7.9 runs per game to rank 24th nationally in scoring. Five batters are hitting above .300, led by shortstop Tyler Yamaguchi (.365, one homer, 14 RBIs), outfielder Austin Miller (.341), third baseman Dean Lawson (.341, five doubles) and outfielder Matt Burkart (.340). All also play a part in helping the Bears rank 50th in stolen bases per game. … Lum has emerged as the team’s best pitcher early this spring through four starts. The Hawaii native has 26 strikeouts in 18 innings. … Northern Colorado’s ERA ranks 150th (4.68), while it is among the most error-prone units in college baseball (.960 fielding percentage, 231st).

Dugout chatter: Nebraska is 45-6 against Northern Colorado and has won six straight, all by at least six runs. The recent dominance isn’t lost on Altavilla as the Huskers look to scoop up more wins in the midst of a nine-game homestand that finishes with three games against Northwestern State this weekend. “I think those are five games that we’re definitely capable of winning and winning by a lot, hopefully. … It definitely helped this weekend to put up a ton of runs and we’re going to take that into next week and I think we’ll be just fine.” … The two-game series marks the first time either team will play on a Tuesday or a Wednesday this season. … Northern Colorado continues a lengthy road trip at UC Davis beginning Friday. … Nebraska raised its batting average with runners in scoring position from .212 to .267 after a 22-for-59 (.373) outburst against Cal Poly.
