A bar in Council Bluffs has built a Cleveland Browns-style beer fridge to poke fun at Nebraska football’s losing streak.
The fridge at Barley’s is packed full of red and white Budweiser bottles. When the Huskers win (they’ve lost eight straight), the fridge will open, and any Husker fan in the bar will get a cold one on the house.
The concept is a replication of an ad campaign where Bud Light built and stocked 10 locked fridges in Cleveland, Ohio, targeting the NFL’s woeful Browns. When the Browns beat the New York Jets on Sept. 20, their first win since Christmas Eve 2016, the chains came off the fridge and Browns fans got a free beer.
“As most great ideas come, they come after a few beers,” said Matt Johnson, owner of Barley’s. “A bunch of Iowa fans were talking about how fun it would be to do a Cleveland Browns style cooler.”
The side of the custom fridge reads:
“In the spirit of being Iowa Nice, Barley’s is offering a gift to our neighbor who is hurting. Their once proud program can’t seem to win a game. When the Big Red ends the 2nd longest losing streak in the nation, enjoy some ‘Frosty’ cold beverages on us. #GBR #IowaNice”
Johnson, a Hawkeyes fan, said he’d laugh if he saw a black and gold cooler full of Miller High Life commemorating a Hawkeye downturn, so he hopes Husker fans will find the joke funny.
“It’s just fun banter back and forth,” he said. “We don’t get very many chances like this.”
