COLUMBUS, Ohio — Natalie Cooke scored on the final attempt of a shootout to give sixth-seeded Nebraska a victory over third-seeded Ohio State in the Big Ten quarterfinals Sunday afternoon.
The Huskers (9-6-5) moved into a semifinal against seventh-seeded Minnesota, which upset Rutgers on Sunday.
Nebraska and Ohio State (9-5-4) played to a 1-1 draw during the regular season, and Sunday’s match was scoreless going into the shootout. Before penalty kicks, NU’s Meg Brandt had a shot attempt bounce off the crossbar early in the second half while Ohio State hit the crossbar in the second overtime.
Ohio State outshot the Huskers 16-7, but NU keeper Aubrei Corder made six saves.
Corder would come up with three more stops in the shootout.
The shootout was tied 2-2 after four rounds when Corder stopped a low attempt by Izzy Rodriguez.
That set the stage for Cooke, whose shot deflected off the hand of goalie Devon Kerr before crossing the goal line for the winner. Savanah Uveges and Kenzie Coons also scored in the shootout for the Huskers.
Corder recorded her fifth shutout of the season and 23rd of her career.
The Huskers and Gophers will play at 12:30 p.m. Friday in Westfield, Indiana. That will be after the other semifinal between Penn State at Illinois at 10 a.m. The final will be next Sunday.
