Nebraska women lose fourth-quarter lead, game against Buffalo in San Juan Shootout

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Junior guard Cierra Dillard scored a career-high 25 points to lead Buffalo to an 82-72 win over the Nebraska women Thursday afternoon in the relocated San Juan Shootout.

It was Buffalo’s first-ever win over a Big Ten opponent as the Bulls improved to 3-0.

Nebraska (3-2) trailed by 10 in the first quarter before pulling within 39-37 by halftime. The Huskers then started the second half on an 11-2 run. Center Kate Cain scored eight straight points, and fellow freshman Taylor Kissinger added a 3-pointer to put NU up 48-41 with 5:35 left in the third.

Buffalo quickly responded to tie it at 50-50. NU took a 56-55 lead into the fourth quarter and stretched its advantage to 66-62 on two Jasmine Cincore free throws with 7:10 left before the Bulls scored seven straight and stayed in front the rest of the way.

Nebraska went nearly seven minutes without a field goal in the fourth quarter when Buffalo outscored the Huskers 27-16.

Buffalo finished with a huge advantage at the foul line: The Bulls went 22 of 27 compared with NU’s 10 of 22. The Huskers were 2 of 8 from the line in the final seven minutes.

Katherine Ups added a career-high 18 points for the Bulls, while Hannah Whitish led four Huskers in double figures with 15 points and six assists.

Kissinger, who was 4 of 14 from behind the arc, added 13 points, six rebounds and three steals, while Cain had 12 points and two blocks.

Nebraska returns to action Friday in Daytona Beach, taking on Coastal Carolina at 1 p.m. The Chanticleers fell to 3-2 on the season with a 50-34 loss to North Texas on Thursday.
