30 Year Anniversary of Kerrey-Karnes Debate Raises Questions for 2018

Omaha, NE.—As the debate-debate rages on for several key Nebraska races—who will debate, how often and when—the big question is do these debates matter.

They are often, and arguably quite rightly, characterized as little more than highly publicized news conferences, with the candidates seldom challenged or surprised and therefore able to fall back on talking points that do little to move the issues forward.

So do they matter?

30 years ago one definitely did.

It was the U.S. Senate race between Bob Kerrey and David Karnes (see our video report above).
