Beatrice Public Schools to Extend Bus Company Agreement

BEATRICE – Beatrice Public Schools plans to extend a contract with a bus company another year, because of the company’s efforts in helping the district with route changes and the grade-level building arrangement.

Superintendent Jason Alexander says the district wants to extend by one year, the agreement with Mid States Bus Company, rather than request proposals for the service.

Alexander says the working relationship meets the district’s goals to operate bus transportation safely, efficiently and more equitably for everyone.

Assistant School Superintendent Dr. Jackie Nielsen says Mid States has also been utilizing a software program to help optimize routes the bus service uses.

During a school board committee session Thursday, Superintendent Alexander said the district is planning to eliminate a position in the district that monitors energy efficiency, at the end of this school year.  The position began several years ago, when the district undertook an energy management program… effort to conserve energy.

Eliminating the energy management position will save about $15,500.  As budgets get tighter, Alexander says the district will be able to save some money, and possibly transition that job into a para-educator position.
