BEATRICE – The Homestead National Monument of America is hosting special events this Sunday afternoon, in advance of the National Country Schools Association Conference in Beatrice, Monday through Wednesday.
Park Ranger Susan Cook says activities start at one p.m., Sunday.

Sunday’s events also include a presentation by the author of a book detailing one of the most devastating weather events of the Plains.

Following the author’s presentation, at three p.m., Sunday, all of the stories shared that afternoon will be compiled and teachers will be honored at the event.
Laskin’s book details the Children’s Blizzard of January 12th, 1888 which killed hundreds, including many children. The blizzard got its name because it struck Nebraska and other Plains states at the time schools were dismissing, for the afternoon. Laskin researched the story and his book, published in 2004, became a national bestseller.
