Citizen Follows Drunk Driver To Crash Site

PLATTSMOUTH – Cass Couty Sheriff William Brueggemann suspects a drunk driver fled a disturbance at Beaver Lake before nearly crashing into gas pumps at Hy Vee in Plattsmouth and later going airborne into a road ditch, where he hit a power pole.

Deputies responded to a report of a drunk driver around 9:30 Saturday night when customers at Hyvee said a pickup truck nearly hit the gas pumps and a parked vehicle.

A citizen followed the truck from the gas station and deputies meanwhile learned the registered owner of the truck had been in a disturbance earlier at Beaver Lake.

The citizen informed deputies that the pickup had left the road near 15th and Rock Bluff and severed a wooden power pole.

The 43-year-old driver was still in the vehicle when rescue crews arrived. He was taken to a trauma center at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

Brueggemann says he has a 15-year suspended license for DUI convictions in Lincoln.
