City Council Could Soon Consider Site For New Beatrice Fire Station

BEATRICE – Beatrice City officials continue to work on site selection for a new Beatrice Fire and Rescue Department.

The new headquarters will replace the department’s home in the lower level of the Beatrice Municipal Auditorium.

City Administrator Tobias Tempelmeyer says a handful of sites are still under consideration.

Tempelmeyer says bond counsel discussions have been held and the city is preparing for architectural services.

Last November, Beatrice voters approved an additional half-cent local sales tax, which will generate revenue to finance the bond issue for the new station.

Tempelmeyer says regardless of which site is chosen, there will likely be some environmental testing, which could be a four-to-five month process.  Closing on a site for the fire and rescue station may not occur until late summer.

Collection of the additional half-cent of local sales tax begins, April 1st.  Once the project is paid off, that half-cent tax sunsets.
