County Shows Formal Support for Homestead Name Change

BEATRICE – The Homestead National Monument of America has received local county support toward renaming the National Park Service attraction, west of Beatrice.

The Gage County Board, Wednesday, passed a resolution encouraging that the name be changed to Homestead National Historical Park.

President of the Friends of the Homestead, Diane Vicars says a proposal is before Congress for the name change, being promoted by members of the state’s congressional delegation.

Vicars says there is past evidence to show that sites changing their name to include the word, “park”, see an increase in visitor traffic.

:13                  “added benefit”

The proposed name change would require congressional approval.  Vicars says the name change would carry little cost, since the national monument is already on a rotating schedule to upgrade signs and letter head.

Earlier, the City of Beatrice approved a similar resolution of support for the name change.

During the current federal government partial shutdown, Education and Heritage Centers at the Homestead have been closed.  Visitors are still able to use the trail system, but monument employees are not on duty, to give assistance.
