Diller Man Identified as Driver Killed in Pickup, Semitrailer Collision

BEATRICE – The driver of a pickup was killed Wednesday morning, during a collision on a partly snow-packed Nebraska Highway 112, three miles east of Odell.   Gage County law officers said this morning, the victim was 66-year-old John Scheuler, of Diller.  He was not believed to be using a seatbelt, and airbags in the pickup did not deploy.

The collision between the northbound pickup and the southbound semitrailer truck happened at around 10:45 a.m., slightly north of the intersection of Nebraska Highways 8 and 112.

Chief Deputy Gage County Sheriff Doug Klaus says the pickup slid out of control on the snowy road surface, into the path of the semitrailer.

The driver of the semitrailer was not injured. He was identified as 39-year-old Robert Brackett, of Omaha.  Authorities say he was using a safety restraint.  Klaus said road conditions likely were a factor in the accident.

Nebraska Department of Transportation personnel helped direct traffic at the scene.   The collision sheared off the bed of the pickup, which went off the west side of the highway, remaining on its wheels.   The semitrailer truck came to rest on the southbound lane of the highway.
