Evacuations Advised For Everyone Who Was Flooded In 2011

PERCIVAL – Officials are urging residents Iowans from Pacific Junction to Hamburg to prepare for evacuation.

A breach in the federal levee near Offut Air Force Base is increasing flood hazards for Pacific Junction.

Pat Sheldon of Percival said the levee is being over-topped all along the river, but there are no breaches in the Fremont County area. He said the difference between over-topping and a breach is significant, as a breach means a portion of the levee has washed away. Water will continue to flood there, even if the river level drops.

Sheldon said everyone who lives west of Interstate 29 should already be out.

Sheldon: “Really, everyone who was flooded in 2011 should be prepared to evacuate.”

He said if a breach should occur at night, it could be life-threatening for both residents and rescuers.

Sheldon: “We don’t have equipment and no one trained in water rescue. We’re keeping our fingers crossed and hoping we can hold.”

Evacuations are also being urged in Hamburg south of Highway 333.
