BEATRICE – Now that the Big Blue River is back within its banks in Beatrice, repair and cleanup will be getting underway.
Park facilities, ball fields and roads sustained damage during the high water. Beatrice Mayor Stan Wirth says the damage along with city overtime expense is being documented for possible state and federal reimbursement.
Wirth says officials have conducted an initial review of the response to the flooding. One finding is the need for more equipment to close roads, where needed.

The mayor says the response to the flood has improved since the last flood that affected Beatrice, in 2015. He said there is a need to get a more accurate picture of the river level both in Beatrice, and upstream from the city.

Officials plan to establish a check list that spells out various department duties during different stages of flooding on the Big Blue River.
The mayor says the city also wants to work with business owners to determine how to best keep them open and operating, with the least amount of interruption. City engineering provided maps at some local businesses during the flooding, showing travelers the major routes that were still open, and could be used.
