BEATRICE – The Gage County Sheriff’s Office is seeking to replace one of the department’s three prisoner transport vehicles.
Transporting prisoners to and from other jails is a frequent occurrence, given the capacity limitations of the local jail, built in the 1970s.
Sheriff Millard Gustafson says he is seeking prices on a new van.
:17 “we got now”
The sheriff says the cost of the van is just part of the job. It must also be fitted with the proper cage and equipment.
Gustafson says his office is also in the process of getting a quote for replacing lighting in the detention center.
:19 “for that reason”
Gustafson says the detention center operation is also in the process of renewing a food vendor contract, which will expire this summer. He expects an increase in the per-meal cost, as well as wage increases.
After a recent tour of the jail, Gage County Board member Dennis Byars had a suggestion.
:11 “my opinion”
Gage County placed a jail bond issue before voters in 2009. That $11.36 million issue was defeated, by a four-to-one margin.
