Iowa Responds To Illegal Harvest of Gingseng

JACKSON COUNTY, Iowa – Authorities have arrested a 56-year-old man for suspicion of improperly digging Ginseng on state property.

Conservation officers say Jerry Woodhurst dug 108 Gingseng roots and failed to leave the entire plant intact as required by law. 47 plant tops were found on the ground.

A Gingseng harvester permit is required in Iowa. The plant is used in herbal products and most of the plants dug up in Iowa are exported to countries in Asia.
