Man Charged With Marijuana Near School Denied House Arrest

FALLS CITY – County Judge Curtis Maschman has denied a Falls City man’s request for “house arrest” while he awaits trial on a charge of intent to distribute marijuana near the Falls City South Elementary School.

Thomas Bassett, 36, was serving a 30-day sentence for violation of a harassment protection order  in September, when he asked the judge to order him to house arrest for the final 10 days. He said he would assist in the care of a family member with a medical issue.

Court records says Bassett would work out of state and would not be able to care for the relative during the day. The judge denied his request and ordered Bassett to appear in court Oct. 22.

An arrest affidavit says Falls City police assisted Omaha police in serving a search warrant at East 12th Street in May.

Court records say officers found 187 grams of marijuana at the house, which is about 500 feet from the elementary school.
