Atchison County Officials Advise Citizens To Evacuate

RULO – Officials in Atchison County, Mo., are advising an evacuation beginning at 7 a.m. on Thursday for people threatened by MissouriRiver and Tarkio River flooding.

Major flooding is forecast for the Missouri River at Rulo that could cause widespread flooding in Missouri.

The Missouri River is expected to climb to 26.6 feet by Sunday.

At 26 feet, the levee protecting Big Lake may be over-topped. Highway 159 in Missouri would begin to flood.

If the river goes above 27.3 feet, lowland flooding could be experienced similar to the area impacted in 2011.

Atchison County officials are advising residents to evacuate beginning at 7 a.m. this morning.

Although the water is still contained in the levee system, officials say the evacuation gives time to head to safety.

Officials urge individuals who don’t live in the area or have equipment there to stay out.

The Tarkio River at Fairfax remains under a flood warning until further notice.
