Nebraska City Utilities Reports Widespread Power Outage

NEBRASKA CITY – Equipment failure at a substation resulted in an electrical power outage for much of the Nebraska City Utilities’ service area early Wednesday morning.

General Manager Jeff Kohrs said the outage impacted all of Nebraska City and the communities of Brock, Julian and Talmage. Lorton, Dunbar and Otoe were also affected, as well as rural areas around Syracuse.

The outage did not affect the utilities’ west line, which supplies power to Unadilla, Palmyra and Douglas.

The electric utility used what is called a “black start” to get electrical power restored to the power plant at Nebraska City. From there, the power plant began generating electricity and some power was restored after an hour.

Power at all locations was restored by 5 a.m.

Kohrs said the cause of the outage is still being investigated Wednesday morning. He said safety equipment at the substation appears to have operated correctly to protect the main transformer from damage.
