BEATRICE – Nebraska lawmakers have advanced a bill that seeks to provide duties in state law for school resource officers, in Nebraska.
LB 390 advanced to second round on a 34-0 vote Monday, with a Judiciary Committee amendment essentially replacing the bill.
Bill sponsor, Senator Patty Pansing-Brooks says the measure came out of an interim study this past year, where input was obtained from law enforcement and educators.

One issue is the handling of disciplinary issues….and whether those should be handled by school resource officers or school officials.
Pansing-Brooks says the bill would not require a district to hire a school resource officer.

Legislators approved an amendment to the bill put forward by the Judiciary Committee. Its’ Chairman, Senator Steve Lathrop says the amendment would shift state-level responsibilities over school resource officers from the Nebraska Crime Commission, to the State Department of Education.
