Nemaha County Sheriff’s Department Warns Residents About Phone Scam

AUBURN -The Nemaha County Sheriff’s Department wants to warn folks in southeast Nebraska about a phone scam in the area.

Various people in Nemaha County have reported getting contacted by a person claiming to work for the IRS that asks for banking information. The person on the phone threatens that if you do not give him money immediately then you will be arrested.

The person calling may know your name and address and ask you to go to the nearest Wal-Mart to wire money.

The Nemaha County Sheriff’s Department says the IRS will never make phone calls to you asking for money and if they do call, the best thing to do is to simply hang up. You can report questionable calls to the Nemaha County Sheriff’s Office but there is a good chance that the caller is overseas, therefore no legal action would be available.

Otoe County Sheriff’s Department also confirms that they get reports of this scam frequently.
