NRD Opposes Mandatory Releases For Auburn Well Fields

TECUMSEH – Nemaha Natural Resources District directors agreed in January to oppose mandatory releases from watershed dams to help recharge the Auburn wellfields.

Manager Bob Hilske told directors that low levels of the Little Nemaha River mean lower levels of the Auburn water wells. To recharge the city wells, Auburn is asking for senior status on water rights.

If approved by the state Department of Natural Resources, low river levels would force irrigation pumps on the river to shut down.

Hilske said it could also impact 145 storage permits on NRD operated structures.

He said it is unknown whether the NRD would be required to release stored water in the event that the Auburn well fields need to be recharged, but said it would be difficult, if not impossible, to open the valves of most of the structures.

Directors noted that if not for the NRD structures, the water would have already been released down the Missouri River.
