BEATRICE – It appears the town of Odell in southwest Gage County dodged a bullet, from tennis-ball-sized hail that fell overnight, not too far away.   The hail from a severe thunderstorm pounded rural areas around Steele City and near Odell, but no serious damage occurred in the southwest Gage County community.

Gage County Emergency Manager Lisa Wiegand was examining areas in southern Gage County early today, following a wild overnight weather period where some Gage County Deputies monitoring the storm had to quickly move out to avoid damage to patrol vehicles.

Wiegand says law officers and fire department personnel sometimes are placed in risky situations in order to help protect the public.

The major threat this spring has been torrential rains and the flooding it has caused.   Wiegand says wet fields have created headaches for farmers in the area, trying to get planting completed.

Meanwhile, the Big Blue River continues to flood in Beatrice, with minor flooding expected through at least Friday or Saturday.   The City’s Street Department has barricaded entrances to Chautauqua Park and the Veteran’s Memorial Drive area….as the river tops its banks.

The river was forecast to crest Thursday in Beatrice, as slightly more than two feet above flood stage.
