PIERCE – A program that helps kids navigate high school is doing what it can to make sure kids are getting the help they need after they graduate.
The Pierce Public Schools Teammates program hosted a fundraiser on Friday featuring Teammates founder and coaching legend Tom Osborne.
Pierce Teammates coordinator Mark Brahmer says the mentoring program has helped dozens of schools since it began in 2001.
“It’s an opportunity for young people to have an extra adult support system in their lives,” Brahmer said. “It gives them positive support and encouragement. It gives them a friend and opposed to a ‘buddy’.”
Friday’s event was a fundraiser to replenish the Pierce Teammates scholarship fund. Brahmer says it’s a way to continue to help mentees after their days in high school are over.
“When kids have gone through the Teammates program graduate, if they do go on to school, which the vast majority of them do, then we award them with a scholarship after they’ve proven themselves the first semester,” Brahmer said.
Brahmer says three students in the Teammates program graduated on Saturday. Another nine will graduate in 2018.
