Otoe County Claims Mother Stole Settlement Funds After Son’s Injury

NEBRASKA CITY – A Colorado woman is scheduled for arraignment in Otoe County District Court June 12 on allegations that she stole funds awarded to her six-year-old son in a settlement with the Norris school district.

The settlement followed an injury to the boy in 2012 and indicated that just over $12,000 would be placed in an interest bearing account on his behalf.

A Nebraska State Patrol investigator  told the court that an account was opened in the boy’s name with $1,000. However, a court-appointed conservator reported that the check was returned for insufficient funds.

The state patrol investigator says the boy’s mother, 37-year-old Kathryn Hartling, used the settlement funds to pay a wireless phone bill, make purchases at Walmart and for cash.
