Sales Tax Ballot Question Could Be Offered for New Beatrice Fire Station
Fire and Rescue Vehicles Stacked in Limited Space

BEATRICE – The Beatrice City Council will consider a resolution this month to place a half-cent sales tax question on the November ballot, to finance a new fire headquarters.

Monday night, Beatrice Fire Chief Brian Daake updated the council on work being done with JEO Consultants, on a schematic design.  Daake says the project would increase the amount of space for fire trucks, rescue and ambulance vehicles.  Currently, fifteen fire vehicles are stored in a 7,500 square foot lower area of the municipal auditorium. It’s recommended the new station have more than double that amount.

Total square feet in the new headquarters would be about 30,000 square feet, which includes space for personnel, training, office area and office and storage for Beatrice Rural Fire.

:21                  “any one location”

Whether the new headquarters will have drive-through fire bays for vehicles, depends on the site chosen.  A current problem for the department is the need to stack multiple vehicles in bays.

Mayor Stan Wirth says the project considers more than just the space element, in a fire headquarters.

With asphalt work being done this summer on Ella Street, next to the fire department, that will temporarily reduce fire truck exit to the west of the department.

City Administrator Tobias Tempelmeyer says the ballot resolution would include an estimated size and cost of the project. The cost estimate will not include land acquisition.

The Beatrice Fire Department has been located in the lower level of the city auditorium since 1965 and has added ambulance and rescue service.  The current garage area is six-inch depth concrete.  Daake says the industry standard for heavier equipment of today, is now eight inches.
