Science Teacher, Dr. Joan Christen, Winner of Second Annual Clabaugh Educator Award

BEATRICE – With members of the Beatrice High School Science Club in attendance, BHS teacher Dr. Joan Christen was named Monday as the winner of the Rick and Linda Clabaugh Outstanding Educator award.

Executive Director of the Beatrice Educational Foundation, Doris Martin, says a key factor in the award is the ability to inspire, promote and sustain intellectual development of students.

Dr. Christen is the second winner of the award… last year being the inaugural year of the honor… which includes a trophy and a one-thousand-dollar cash prize.

High School Principal Jason Sutter announced over the intercom a request for Science Club members to report to the Hevelone Center, where Dr. Christen was honored.

Christen holds doctorate and master’s degrees from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and a bachelor’s degree from Peru State College.  She’s been a teacher in the areas of physics, biology, botany, zoology and special research.  Students can earn dual-credit….high school and college level….in those areas.

Rick and Linda Clabaugh are owners of a downtown Beatrice Pharmacy and Senior Care business.

The award was presented on the first day of National Education Week. This year’s theme is, “Great Public Schools….a Basic Right and Our Responsibility”.
