SIDNEY – The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office is taking back unwanted prescription drugs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 27 to help prevent pill abuse and theft.
The sheriff’s office is working with the US Drug Enforcement Administration to organize the free and anonymous disposal site at the law enforcement center at 2814 200th St. inSidney.
Sheriff Kevin Aistrope said it is the 17th opportunity in nine years to prevent pill abuse and rid homes of unwanted medicines that might attract thieves. He said medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse.
They are also known to be a source of accidental overdose and poisoning.
The DEA says Americans turned in nearly 460 tons of prescription drugs last fall.
At its 16 previous “Take Back” events, the DEA reports disposal of 5,500 tons of pills.
