Sheriff Says Infant Twin Did Not Thrive After Premature Birth

LOUISVILLE –  A Louisville couple is charged with felony child abuse in the death of one of their malnourished infant twin daughters.

Court records show 23-year-old David Krutina and 20-year-old  Kassandra Krutina were each charged with one count of child abuse resulting in death, negligently, and child abuse negligently causing serious bodily injury.

Cass County Sheriff William Breuggemann reports the twins were born prematurely in February at 27 weeks. “After the twins were discharged from the NICU, there was very little weight gain,” the sheriff reports.

The charges stem from the death of their 6-month-old daughter, Samantha. The Krutinas took her and her twin sister Charlotte to a hospital Sept. 1.

The sheriff says the second twin is doing well in the care of the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.

An autopsy says Samantha died of a bacterial infection caused by malnourishment.

The  couple appeared Friday in Cass County Court. A judge set their bonds at $10,000.
