Sheriff’s Office Warns That “Grant Award” Call Is A Scam

SYRACUSE – The Otoe County Sheriff’s Office is urging citizens to be careful with bank information in light of a recent telephone scam.

The sheriff’s office has been notified that residents are being called from a 202 area code with news that have been awarded a $9,000 grant. The caller asks for a bank account number to deposit the grant award.

Chief Deputy Mike Holland urges people to know who they are talking to before giving out financial information.

He said many times the scammers are located outside of the United States, so it is difficult for law enforcement to stop them. Holland said the best way to avoid financial scams is to not give out information to people you do not know.

He said if people have given financial information to these scammers, they should immediately contact their bank to have the numbers changed.
